I hadn’t seen the first movie, so I’m coming into this a little blind. I found this movie to be excellent, and exactly what it set out to be. It reminded me of Heat, with enough buy-in from the actors to really bring the thievery, script, lingo, and heist to life. Butler is having a lot of fun here. This is as close to a genuine Max Payne I think we will come to seeing on screen. His grittiness, cop-without-rules vibe feels like a great throwback to movies that in a different time people had a lot of esteem for. Jackson is a really cool leading man, and a cool casting choice. His size, attitude, and calm demeanor sells the characters background well.

 The chemistry he has with Butler is off-the-charts. This film in particular inverts the bond between cop-and-thief, which while it isn’t a “twist” within itself, created places for levity in an otherwise group of very serious men and women. Lending to all of this is a really fun cast of different international power players whose rules, decision, and acting don’t break the reality of the script in any way. Their additions bring real depth to the characters, and creates a sense of kinship among our “den of thieves”. Without spoiling anything, the centerpiece heist of the film is an excellent sense of tension. 

The cinematography, and cuts between different moving pieces help add what felt like a sense of professionalism to the thieves in play. Real guys don’t make a mess, and that’s a message this film hammers down until mess is the only option. I think it’s weird when people rate movies like this poorly, but I didn’t see the original. It’s a serious, international, heist movie, with good twists, some really good acting, and more than anything it’s not over-the-top. I would sign up to see the Third.
